An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail - quote by Edwin Land
While I agree with Edwin, I believe failure in business does not have to involve a big financial loss or a huge waste of time which is often how we understand failure in this arena.
If we take the time to follow a line creativity, analysis and risk assessment involving those around us we can do a pretty good job of deciding if our bright idea will fly or fail.
If you’ve been following what I have been saying over my different blog articles you will understand that I believe the people who can often give us the biggest insight into the outcome are the ones that we sometimes overlook. They are those at our gateways like receptionists, sales people and doormen. In your inquiry I would encourage you to give them a safe voice so you have the full picture for
Creativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected - William Power
I just want to encourage you that each one of us has the capacity to creatively connect the unconnected.
I was chatting with a friend the other night and she suddenly had an a-ha moment. She realised her creativity is activated by writing bespoke code that helps her colleagues enter data in a much more streamlined way. To that point she hadn't see that as creative and yet her colleagues would have thought it was extremely creative and a 'life saver' for them as time stretched teachers.
All this to say: I believe we need to re designate creativity for everyone rather than being reserved for the 'artistic' only.
Bill Moyers says, 'Creativity is piercing the mundane to find the marvelous'.
I agree with him, but I also know that in the full-on mode of a normal work day it's hard to take the time to even think about adding anything creative let alone doing it.
So, here's an idea for your team to play with while on a break in the staff room or at the water cooler....
Put a white board or flip chart up on the wall and write something on it that you would like some ideas or input on. Leave markers and sticky notes around for the team to use and let them go wild....no restrictions, no judgement, no names. You may be surprised as what happens. You may even get a peek at the marvelous.
Focus is crucial to the design process.
Focus on the negative and you’ll struggle to get past it.
Focus on the possible and impossible and you’ll begin to see possibilities.
'Creative ideas reside in people’s minds but are trapped by fear or rejection. Create a judgment-free environment and you’ll unleash a torrent of creativity.' -- Alex Osborn
As a designer in training this is something I was taught. We had the best time while doing our degree going wild with creativity. Truly fun! The sad thing was that our tutors said 'Have fun now because it won't be like that out in the business and design world'. How utterly sad. As I have worked with clients across the spectrum I have seen that there was truth in what was said to us.
I have learned despite budget and time constraints it is possible to think big and crazy, to take your work out of the ordinary and done before into the fresh and inspirational. Taking your team with you adds a dimension you will never achieve on your own - trust me.
Set your team free and allow them to journey with you to create and find solutions together.
I love this quote....it is so TRUE.
I believe everyone is creative in their own unique way.
I also believe you can't use up your creativity.
The interesting thing I find when I am in a creative space is that it's a bit like a cork has come off a fizzy bottle that has just been shaken and the ideas just come tumbling out!
So what stops the flow?
This could be the notion that you are no creative .....or it could be you are too busy running - often my problem.
Most of us need to find time to get our head in a creative space. Of course there are some who don't seem to get there head out of that space too so there definitely need to be a balance!
Love yourself enough to give yourself the time. For some of us this has to be a deliberate decision. Our priority by default is very often answering everybody else's beck and call and we forget or ignore listening to our own need to stop and replenish ourselves. You need to know that to do this will be GOOD for your mental health and the benefits WILL flow on to those around you - trust me on this. You will approach life with a much more positive energy and perspective!
So....get out there and do something creative! Doesn't need to be art or craft ...it could be writing, dreaming or just having fun somewhere where you are making it up as you go along! Could be dreaming and scheming a business idea that really has you excited!!!!
